The Newsroom preserves and promotes the histories and values of the Guardian and the Observer newspapers and guardian.co.uk through collecting, recording, researching and making accessible material that provides an accurate and comprehensive history of Guardian News & Media Ltd.

Historical enquiries

Guidelines on researching the history of the Guardian and the Observer are available in our Frequently Asked Questions and summary histories of the Guardian and the Observer are available online. A searchable version of the archive catalogue is also now available: newsroom archive catalogue.

Where material is available for public consultation or where more extensive research is required enquirers are encouraged to undertake research personally.

Consulting the collections

Material may be consulted in the Reading Room in the Newsroom. Advance appointments are essential. To book a research appointment, please email newsroom@guardian.co.uk.

Supporting education

Access to the archive collections is available to school children through a programme of educational workshops and seminars, designed to complement classroom teaching of the national curriculum.
