1906 Born in Solingen, Germany, March 19. Family moved to Austria.

1932 Joined Austrian Nazi party, recruited to Himmler's elite SS.

1941 Began creating death camps, developing gassing and organising mass convoys of European Jews.

1942 Formally charged with implementation of "Final Solution".

1944 Reported to Himmler that 4m Jews had died in camps; 2m others killed by mobile extermination units.

1945 Put in US internment camp.

1946 Escaped to Argentina.

1960 Caught by Israeli secret agents.

1961 Tried in Jerusalem for crimes against Jewish people and humanity.

1962 Executed in Tel Aviv, May 31.
